Almost every Gujarat startup scheme asks for one document. It is the DPIIT recognition certificate. Grant forms, co-working applications, and seed funds all ask for it sooner or later.
Many founders get confused here. Registering a company is one thing. Getting DPIIT recognition is another. The first creates your business. The second gives it official “startup” status.
The good news is that recognition is free and fully online. This guide walks you through it using official sources. It is part of Gujpreneur’s series on Gujarat startup support.
What Is DPIIT Recognition?
DPIIT is the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It decides which businesses count as startups. The rules sit in G.S.R. notification 108(E).
Who Is Eligible in 2026?
Per the official Startup India page, you must meet these conditions:
- Be a Private Limited Company, Partnership Firm, LLP, or Cooperative Society.
- Have turnover below ₹200 crore in any previous financial year. Deep tech startups get ₹300 crore.
- Be within 10 years of incorporation. Deep tech startups get 20 years.
- Work on innovation or improvement of products, services, or processes. Show potential for jobs or wealth creation.
- Not be formed by splitting or rebuilding an existing business.
Important: many older blogs still say ₹100 crore. That is outdated. Always check the official page.
What Do You Need?
You need an incorporation or registration certificate. You also need a short explanation of your innovation or scalability, per the official user guide. Your NSWS profile will ask for your entity’s PAN, address, and authorised signatory details.
How to Apply, Step by Step
DPIIT applications now go through the National Single Window System (NSWS).

The official guide lists these steps:
- Go to nsws.gov.in. Click Login, then Investor Login, then Sign Up.
- Set up your profile. Add your entity type, PAN, address, and authorised signatory.
- Search for “Registration as a Startup” under Central Approvals. Add it to your dashboard.
- Click Apply Now and fill in the form.
- Review everything carefully, then submit.
- Track your status and DPIIT number on the dashboard.
- Download your certificate from NSWS, the Startup India portal, or DigiLocker.
Certificates are usually issued within two working days of a complete application.
Avoid These Mistakes
- No edits after submission. You can save a draft, but you cannot change a submitted form.
- Rejection has a wait. You can reapply only after three months.
- Never pay an agent. DPIIT says it charges no fee and has appointed no agents. Apply on your own.
Stuck? Call the Startup India helpline at 1800 115 565 (10:00 AM to 5:30 PM).
Why Gujarat Founders Need It
Recognition opens doors across the state:
- Grants: Startup Gujarat seed support asks for DPIIT or state recognition, per GUSEC’s scheme page. See the current windows in our active Gujarat startup grants list.
- Co-working: i-Hub’s co-working space gives preference to DPIIT-recognised startups. Read more in our i-Hub Gujarat guide.
- Incubators: the central Seed Fund Scheme also needs recognition. Compare your options in our GUSEC vs IIMA Ventures vs iCreate guide.
- Tax: recognised Pvt Ltd companies and LLPs formed after 1 April 2016 can apply separately for Section 80-IAC. This gives a tax holiday for 3 consecutive years out of the first 10.

Still a student without a company? DPIIT needs a registered entity. Start with our SSIP 2.0 eligibility and benefits guide. It supports student innovators before they incorporate.
Conclusion
DPIIT recognition costs nothing and takes about two working days. Yet it unlocks much of Gujarat’s startup support. Incorporate first, apply once, and keep the certificate ready.
