Gujarat is set to strengthen its water infrastructure with the state’s first air-filled rubber dams, bringing advanced global engineering to irrigation and water conservation. The construction of 2 new rubber dams is currently in progress. One is being built on the Heran river and the other one is on the Ambika river with a total budget of ₹162 crores.
The Rajvasana Rubber Dam which costs around ₹82.97 crores is almost 75% finished and is supposed to finish by September, 2027. This dam once completed will provide assured irrigation to around 3,420 hectares of agricultural land in 25 villages.
The Pathakwadi Rubber Dam project worth ₹79.13 crore in Tapi district is almost finished. About 90% of the work has already been completed. The project employs Japanese design standards and has a high-performance rubber bladder from South Korea. The dam is expected to irrigate over 650 hectares of agricultural land and will use SCADA-based technology. The dam has been designed in accordance with the Japanese Code 2000. Its specially engineered rubber bladder, imported from South Korea, ranges from 18 mm to 32 mm in thickness. It is designed to perform efficiently even at temperatures exceeding 50°C and has an estimated service life of 30 years. The dam has been built to withstand high temperatures of more than 50 degrees Celsius over its possible lifetime of 30 years.
