Consumer forums, local courts where buyers can file complaints, have empowered ordinary people to seek justice when products or services fall short. Across Gujarat, many consumers have successfully secured refunds, compensation, or product replacements. These outcomes show that respecting customers builds loyalty. Local lawyers emphasise that businesses must view consumer rights as part of service, not as a burden.

Amul Protects Consumers and Its Brand

Amul is more than a dairy brand in Gujarat; it is part of daily life. When another company sold products under a very similar name and design, the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation acted quickly. They aimed to protect both the brand and consumers from confusion.

A spokesperson for Amul said, “We do not just protect a logo. We protect millions of consumers who trust Amul every day.”

This trademark action highlighted an important lesson. When a product might mislead consumers, brands must act. Protecting customers also strengthens loyalty and reputation.

Amul’s counsel, Abhishek Singh, argued that the Italian company had “blatantly copied the script, style, and manner in which ‘Amul’ was represented.”

Wagh Bakri Stands for Clarity

Another example is Wagh Bakri, the famous Gujarat tea brand. A rival company used a similar name, which could confuse buyers. Wagh Bakri took legal action to protect both consumers and its identity. They argued that the rival brand’s name and packaging were deceptively similar and likely to mislead consumers in the marketplace.

One Wagh Bakri executive explained, “When consumers recognise our name, they trust quality, flavour, and value. We defend that trust to protect informed choice.”

These cases show that honest branding matters. Misleading practices can harm buyers and also damage long-term business credibility. 

From No-Return Boards to Transparent Policies

In many traditional shops, signs once read “No returns” or “No exchange.” As consumers became aware of their rights, many challenged these policies in forums. Authorities clarified that such signs do not override legal protections.

The Gujarat government declared that “No return or exchange” policies are illegal under the consumer protection law.

A consumer lawyer in Surat explained, “Customers may bargain in the market, but standards and fairness cannot be ignored. Traders must act honestly.”

This change transformed retail practices. Shops now post clear return policies and train staff to handle complaints professionally. Transparency builds trust and strengthens relationships with quality-conscious Gujarati buyers.

Online Shopping and Accountability

Gujaratis quickly embraced online shopping while keeping their values intact. They read reviews, compare prices across platforms, and examine return and warranty policies carefully.

When online purchases fail to meet expectations, consumers increasingly escalate complaints rather than stay silent. Platforms have responded with faster refunds, better grievance handling, and clearer guarantees.

A Vadodara-based seller observed, “One unresolved complaint can lose ten future customers in Gujarat.”

This trend shows that online sellers must respect consumer rights to maintain loyalty and a positive reputation.

Festivals Increase Expectations

Navratri, Diwali, and weddings bring huge spending in Gujarat. Traditional wear, sweets, jewellery, and home goods see a massive surge. During these times, consumers demand authenticity, certificates, and clear guarantees.

Awareness of consumer rights does not reduce sales. On the contrary, it encourages businesses to improve quality and customer support. Brands that provide clarity and fairness during festive seasons often gain lifelong loyalty.

Lessons for Businesses

The golden rule in Gujarat’s marketplace is simple: a trusted customer returns and recommends, while a disappointed one never does.

To earn loyalty, businesses should focus on clear product information, transparent return and refund policies, fast complaint resolution, and respectful communication. Between April and July 2025, the National Consumer Helpline resolved over 18,500 complaints, refunding more than ₹8 crore.

Legal frameworks, court decisions, and trademark protections are tools to build trust. Brands that embrace fairness and transparency create stronger, lasting connections with customers.
