SSIP 2.0 Explained: Full Eligibility & Benefits Guide

Picture a diploma student in Rajkot. She builds a low-cost water-level sensor for farm borewells. It works on her desk. But better parts cost money, and her family cannot spend more. Her college has no prototype budget.

Many Gujarat students are stuck at this exact step. Their ideas are good. Their funds are not. This gap is what the Student Start-up and Innovation Policy (SSIP 2.0) was designed to close.

SSIP 2.0 is a Government of Gujarat policy that backs student ideas with grants, patent support, and mentoring. This guide explains it in plain words. Every fact below comes from official or primary sources, linked for you. At Gujpreneur, we tell the stories of Gujarat’s entrepreneurs, from legacy businesses to new startups. Schemes like SSIP 2.0 shape those journeys, so we wanted this one to be explained in a simplified yet in-depth way!

What Is SSIP 2.0?

The Education Department issued the policy resolution on 4 January 2022. It runs from 11 January 2022 to 31 March 2027.

The total fund is ₹500 crore. Of this, ₹300 crore comes from the state budget as the Student Innovation Fund. The remaining ₹200 crore is a Grantee Matching Fund, raised from university budgets, private funds, and CSR. Gujarat Knowledge Society is the nodal agency.

The goals are big. The policy aims to reach 5 million students and support 10,000 prototypes. It also targets 5,000 IP filings and 500 incubated startups.

Who Is Eligible for SSIP 2.0?

Individuals must be up to 35 years old. You qualify if you are:

  • A school student up to Class 12
  • A diploma, vocational, UG, PG, or doctoral student, or an alumnus
  • A dropout from any school, institute, or university

Your idea must improve a product, process, or service. Or it should be a scalable business model that can create jobs or wealth.

Institutions must be based in Gujarat. Public and private universities, affiliated institutes, and government, grant-in-aid, or private schools can join. A state committee selects grantees based on past innovation work and action plans.

What if your college is not a grantee? You are not shut out. Students from such institutions are mapped to a nearby SSIP grantee university.

What Are the Benefits?

Prototype grants

  • Class 9 to 12: up to ₹20,000 per project
  • Higher and technical education: up to ₹2.5 lakh per project

IP support (maximum amounts)

  • Patent: ₹75,000 (India), ₹1.5 lakh (other countries)
  • Trademark: ₹12,500
  • Industrial design: ₹9,000
  • Copyright: ₹8,000

Higher education students can get IP support of up to 100% of expenses.

Other support: access to tinkering labs, innovation labs, and incubation centres. The policy also promises that grants reach beneficiaries in 45 to 60 days, in two or three instalments.

Going bigger: Startup Srujan Seed Support (S4), run by i-Hub Gujarat, offers ₹2.5 lakh to ₹10 lakh to early-stage innovators and startups. i-Hub also runs mentoring and incubation programmes.

How to Apply

  1. Start at your college. Meet your SSIP coordinator or Innovation Club.
  2. Prepare your proposal. Write a short concept note and a budget.
  3. Get screened. Your institution’s committee reviews and selects projects.
  4. Receive and report. Share progress and credit SSIP for the support.
  5. Scale up. For Srujan, register on the i-Hub portal and follow its application manual.

Conclusion

SSIP 2.0 turns a student’s “what if” into a working prototype. It gives money, patent help, and mentors. Our Rajkot student, for example, could use that grant to buy parts and file a patent.

Policy periods end, so confirm current status on SSIP Gujarat before applying. Want more Gujarat startup guides and founder stories? Explore Gujpreneur’s Startups section. Building something yourself? Register your business with Gujpreneur.
